【写真展案内】

　これらの写真は、ソビエト連邦の消滅（1991年12月26日）から間もない1992年3月に、極東シベリア・ハバロフスク近郊にある2箇所の収容所(矯正労働収容所)を主な舞台として撮影されたものである。
　それまで“鉄のカーテン”に仕切られ、厳格に管理されていた体制の崩壊によってあらゆる統制が緩み、国家の内実、内幕が白日のもとに晒された希有の機会であった。 未開の地シベリアは、帝政ロシアの時代から犯罪者や戦争捕虜などに強制労働を課す抑留の地でもあった。ソビエトの時代、囚人を使役する収容所産業が、国家建設に欠くことのできない基幹事業として位置づけられていた。第2次大戦後に多くの日本兵や民間人が抑留され、過酷な労働を強いられた苦い記憶もある。ペレストロイカが浸透しつつあったソビエト連邦の末期、政治犯はほぼいなくなっていたが、おびただしい数の刑事犯を収容し、労働力として使役する収容所産業は絶えることなく稼働していた。そこでは、強権政治がもたらす世相から脱落した弱者でもある受刑者たちの、重苦しくも、淡々と過ぎゆく日常を垣間見ることができた。
　このたび世界は、ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻という凄惨な現実を突きつけられた。ウクライナから連れ去られた人々の一部は極東シベリアにまで強制移送される、とも報じられている。それが事実であるなら、私が30年前に垣間見た光景に、新たな要素が上書きされることになるのだろうか。

Siberian camp 1992

These photographs are mainly set in two corrective labor camps near Khabarovsk, Far East Siberia, in March 1992, shortly after the end of the Soviet Union (December 26, 1991). Due to the collapse of the system, a rare opportunity manifested to allow a glimpse behind the “Iron Curtain”, revealing some of the nation's secrets and inner workings.

Since the days of imperial Russia, the vast, undeveloped Siberian landscape has been home to many detention centers, which imposed forced labor on criminals and prisoners of war. During the Soviet era, the labor of the prisoners became an indispensable component for national construction. There is also the bitter memory that many Japanese soldiers and civilians were detained after World War II, and were forced to work hard at these facilities.

At the end of the Soviet Union, when Perestroika was happening, most political prisoners were freed. However, numerous criminal offenders remained housed at these centers, and continued to be used as a labor force. In 1992, I was able to catch firsthand a glimpse of the harsh daily lives of the inmates. They were in fact vulnerable people, who had fallen through the cracks of society, brought about by a powerful political system.

Now, in 2022, the world is presently facing the terrible reality of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It has also been reported that some people have been taken from Ukraine and sent to Far East Siberia. If that is the case, will the sights I witnessed 30 years ago be added to with new elements?

【出展者略歴】

野町 和嘉 / Kazuyoshi Nomachi

1946年高知県生まれ。杵島隆に師事した後、1971年にフリーの写真家となる。1972年のサハラ砂漠への旅をきっかけにアフリカを広く取材する。1980年代後半からは、過酷な風土を生き抜く人々の営みと信仰をテーマとして舞台を中近東、アジアに移し、長期の取材を続ける。2000年代以降は、アンデス、インド等を中心に取材。『サハラ』『ナイル』『メッカ巡礼』『チベット』など多くの写真集が国際共同出版される。東京、ローマ、ミラノ、台北ほかで『聖地巡礼』展を開催。土門拳賞、芸術選奨文部大臣新人賞などを受賞。2009年紫綬褒章受章。日本写真家協会会長。
